The Weirdest Love Song You’ll Hear Today

Long before Roger the alien showed up on American Dad, there was Alf, the cat-eating furball from the planet Melmac. Alf ran for an amazing four years (1986-90) on NBC.  (As an aside, it was the first-ever network show to be broadcast in 5.1 Surround.  But I digress.)

I’m proud to say that I never, ever watch an entire episode.  Germans, however, love the show, even with its dubbed-in dialogue.

How much did they love Alf?  So much that when Tommi Pipier (the German voice of Alf) recorded a love song called “Hallo ALF, Heir Ist Rhonda” back in 1989, the damn thing stayed on the German singles charts for 12 weeks.  What has wrong with them?

  • Alan, I lived in Germany from '88 through '90, so let me put it in context. David Hasselhoff's "Freedom" was also a huge hit back then. I don't want to say that Germans have no music taste, so I'll just that it seemed to be in short supply…I'm sure it's gotten MUCH better.

P.S. thanks for the opportunity to listen to some Hoch Deutsch to test out my rusty German skills. Sadly, I understand every word.
