There’s a big musicians’ protest against AI today

We don’t need AI to make art. That’s what humans are for. Increasingly, though, music-generative AI is creeping into the culture with its fake, soulless, and inhuman analogies of songs. AI companies have also been training their models on copyrighted music made by humans. Compensation? Phht. Fair use blah blah blah.

Musicians are as mad as hell and aren’t going to take it any more. It’s time to take to the streets.

Today (May 19), there is a series of protests planned for New York, LA, Nashville, and Austin organized by the Music Workers Alliance (MWA). The message? “Our music is not your training data. No AI sellout!”

Specifically:

  • The right to refuse any AI to exploit a human musician’s work.
  • Credit and “fair compensation” for anyone who does participate.

In New York, the march will hit the offices of Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group.

Let’s see how many people turn up.
