There’s a new campaign. “Don’t stream fascism: Cancel Spotify.”
Spotify has been in the crosshairs for a couple of political reasons this year. First, artists have been pulling their music from the platform over CEO Daniel Ek’s investment in a defence contractor. Then Spotify started running ICE recruitment ads on its free tier. This has caused other artists to bail.
Now there’s a campaign called “Don’t Stream Fascism: Cancel Spotify.” The organizer is Indivisible, an activist organization that claims more than a million members, all of whom have signed up to “fight for progressive politics.” It was one of the partners in the whole No Kings protests in October. More than seven million people hit the streets for that.
I quote from their web page:
“Spotify is running ads recruiting agents for ICE, the federal agency charged with mass deportation and surveillance of immigrant communities. These ads target vulnerable populations, promise signing bonuses, and normalize fear and intimidation in our neighborhoods.
“Spotify claims these ads comply with their policy, but the truth is streaming hate is not neutral. It’s a choice. We refuse to fund it. We refuse to ignore it.”
Indivisible is calling for a boycott of Spotify. They’re also encouraging peaceful protests outside Spotify offices, studios, and events. The boycott will continue until (1) all ICE and DHS advertising deals with Spotify are canceled, (2) Spotify fixes its advertising policy to outlaw “government propaganda” and any “hate-based recruitment campaigns, and (3) Spotify commits to defending civil rights.
