Medical Mysteries of MusicTech

There’s cool new tech that uses binaural beats in popular music

Binaural beats are a form of sensory stimulation that can help achieve things like intense concentration and super-deep sleep. Such audio stimulation can also be used for various forms of therapy that reduces stress. alleviates anxiety, and can even help with brain injuries. TheThe wellness industry is also big into binaural beats. Companies like MedRhythms tout the benefits of such sounds.

It works by syncing up your brain with a repeating pattern from an external source. I’ve used this loop to help me through intense writing and research sessions.

Here is where things get extra-interesting. Back in 2021, Universal Music bought a piece of MedRhythms. In 2022, Universal was a launch partner for an AI-powered app called Vera, It was used to treat people with dementia. Last September, Universal announced an app called Sollos that uses “cognitive science and proprietary audio technology to support focus, relaxation, and sleep.” And finally, Universal started working with a company called Endel that was all about “AI-powered, artist-driven functional music.”

Today, we’re hearing about a new deal that offers “new and innovative systems and methods for generating and adding neural beats to existing audio tracks.”

From what I gather, this means that binaural beats can be added to any song to add extra therapeutic benefits. It’s totally inaudible, too.

Sounds cool, no? Read more here.
