These global “trigger cities” are most important for launching new songs

Chartmetric is one of the many music industry analysis companies, a place where we can learn about how music really works behind the scenes. Their latest report is their 2024 “Trigger Report.”

This is a list of “Trigger Cities,” places around the world where songs have the best chance of gaining that all-important initial traction thanks to the use of streaming by music fans. Going deep into Spotify’s consumption metrics, Chartmetric looked for artists who have broken out worldwide in the last four years and where those breakouts began on the Spotify platform. They plotted things onto an interactive map, ranking 30 of them by Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4.

Click on any of them and you’ll get a sublist of the top five genres in that city. For example, New York loves hip-hop/rap, pop, R&B/soul, rock, and Latin. Click on Lima, and you have a top five that looks like this: alternative, Latin, pop, rock, and Latin pop. Who knew they rocked so hard in Peru? Singapore lists pop, rock, alternative, dance, and R&B soul. Japan rocks, too, (rock, hip-hop/rap/alternative, pop, J-pop).

This information should be very helpful or artists, managers, and labels. Play with the map here.
