Popular music is always changing, evolving, and being reshaped by the state of society. How much it has changed isn’t always apparent until you go back and listen to songs through the decades.

Video editor Sutherland (Via Laughing Squid) created this compilation of the most popular songs–i.e. #1 chart hits–in the US from 1940 to 2017.
