Medical Mysteries of Music

This dubstep album promises to keep you from being bitten by mosquitos this summer

We’re deep into mosquito season which means we’ve brought out the Off and the DEET. Sure we can use insect repellant, but there’s gotta be a non-chemical way to fight them, right?

A Swedish pharmacy has come up with a playlist of dubstep tracks that it says will keep the buggers from biting.

According to a couple of studies, dubstep music that contains a mix of very high and very low frequencies seem to keep the bloodsucking female mosquito from humans. Instead, they seem to fly towards the source of the music. (Researchers say they are “entertained” by the music.) It also makes them less interested in reproducing.

There’s now a whole album by a duo called Kloudmen. They’ve–well, just look. I swear this is real.

This, obviously, is very important in a world where we worry about malaria, West Nile, Zika and other diseases spread by mosquitoes. If you add up all the damage, illness and death created by mosquitos, they are the deadliest species known to humans.

Who knew that someone like Skrillex could save lives?
