THIS is what Fyre Fest 2 has become? Wow. This is the disaster everyone expected.
Billy McFarland’s Fyre Fest 2 is set to begin on May 30 and, uh, it’s not going well. Quelle supris.
It was always supposed to be a smaller affair: 1800 guests and 40 artists all on the Mexican island of Isla Mujeres. No, wait. It’s now scheduled for Playa Del Carmen. Hang on, maybe not.
The latest from McFarland is that Fyre Fest 2–with tickets starting at US$1400 and heading up to US$1.1 million–is that the event will be scaled down somewhat. Okay, a lot.
According to reports out of Play Del Carmen, local officials have no idea what’s going on. The only permit that has been (allegedly) granted is for a multi-day listening party,
Yeah. A listening party.
It’s set for the Martina Beach Club, a place with a maximum capacity of–wait for it–250 people. The permit allows the event to go for 12 hours, from midnight to 4am on May 30, June 1, and June 2. In other words, a four-hour late-night listening party for three days in a row.
Uh, where are the live performances? Right. There aren’t any. At least not yet. We were supposed hear news of that last week. Nope. Meanwhile, there’s this note from the city of Playa Del Carmen: In light of rumors about an event called ‘Fyre 2’, we inform you that no event with that name will be held in Playa del Carmen. After a responsible review, there is no registration or planning in the municipality.”
