This punk band was permanently banned from Saturday Night Live. They’re touring Canada.

When John Belushi was part of the Saturday Night Live cast, he was a fan of all sorts of music, including LA hardcore. In 1981, he somehow managed to convince Lorne Michaels to book a band called Fear as the special musical guest on the Halloween episode of the show. It did not go well. There was US$200,000 to studio gear.

A year later, a kid named Flea would join as Fear’s bass player for a couple of years. He left in 1984 to found the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Meanwhile, Fear became highly influential to kids like Ian MacKaye (he was one of the “dancers” at SNL and would later go on to form Minor Threat and Fugazi plus create the Dischord music label).

Fear is now on tour across Canada.
