Tech

This streaming service offers nothing but AI-generated music. Give it a try for free.

I’m not sure if the world really wants this, but Kulun Tech, a Chinese company, has launched Melodio. The company claims this is the first-ever streaming service that offers AI-created music based on text prompts supplied by users.

At first, this is kind of fun. I entered “guitar-based industrial music with a reggae beat and female vocals.” In about 30 seconds, a stream of AI-music started. It wasn’t very heavy, and the reggae beat wasn’t obvious, but I did get a female singer.

Next, I entered0 “Needing to concentrate for a write project.” Here are the lyrics to the downtempo track that came next.

In my little corner of the world
Pen and paper’s where I’m monopolized
Every word is a painted story
On this canvas, my mind slowly grows
Concentration calls me, whispers my name
In the silence, each secret is to claim
I am but a vessel, a writer supreme
In the quest for truth, in the rhythm of a dream

Okay, that’s a bit too specific and literal. I amended my prompt to ask for just instrumentals. I got another song with vocals. Memo to Melodio: Needs work. Maybe you’ll have better luck.

Question: What’s the use case for something like this? If I want to stream music, why not use real songs that sound…human? Then again, Melodio could be useful for some bespoke music production needs where no one wants to pay for licensing.
