This will go over well: A Texas school has banned students from wearing all black
We use music to figure out who we are as people. Once that starts coming together, we use music–and its trappings–to broadcast to the world who we are. This explains why every school has those who wear all black: emo kids, Goths, industrial sorts, various flavours of punk, and so on.
However, Charles Middle School in El Paso, Texas, will have none of that. As of this school year, there’s a new dress code. It will be forbidden for any student to dress in black head-to-toe. Why? Because school officials believe that dressing in all black is “associated with depression and mental health issues.”
The president of the El Paso Teachers Association elaborated:
“Charles MS students wear a uniform and one of the school colors is black. They are allowed to wear black. The change was to not allow students to wear completely black from head to toe. The intention is to ensure the physical and mental safety of their students and was initially initiated due to concerns observed by teachers at the end of the last school year.”
So…depression and mental health have colours?
I don’t know how they came to this conclusion. Nothing from the school, the teachers association, or the school board cited any studies to support their position. I always thought that we dressed to make ourselves feel good. It seems to me that such a weird rule would actually increase anxiety among elementary school students.

Everyone needs to go full rainbow then. If black is depressing, then the full rainbow will cheer people up.
And drive the homophobes nuts while they are at it.
