Tickets are on sale for a concert that will take place on September 4, 2640. This is not a typo.
In a church in Germany, an organ is plugging away at a composition entitled “As Slow As Possible” by avant-garde composer, John Cage. And the people in charge of this organ are very, very serious about following Cage’s performance instructions as closely as possible.
Notes change very, very infrequently at St. Burchardi Church in Halberstadt, Germany, On August 5, the note changed from a D (where it had been since February 4, 2024) to an A. This is just the 17th sound to come from the organ since it started the gig on September 4, 2001. (The first instruction was a rest that lasted until February 5, 2003, when we heard a G-sharp, a B, and another G-sharp.)
If you want to see this through to the end. the church is selling “inheritable tickets” for the finale on September 4, 2640. They currently run for €2,640 (plus shipping). You won’t get to see it, but if the organ, the church, and the planet is still around to hear that final note released after 639 years, maybe one of your descendents will.
