Time for our weekly check on the Canadian CDs vs. vinyl battle

Just a few more weeks left in 2024 and once again, the top-selling pre-recorded music format will be the CD. But based on current sales trends, that will probably change as sales of new vinyl are coming up fast as CD sales drop. Let’s see what happens as we get deeper into the holiday shopping season.

Here’s the latest from Luminate:

  • Total CDs sold in Canada last week: 39,857 (up 20.7% from the week before)
  • Total new vinyl sold in Canada last week: 40,678 (up 29.0% from a week earlier.)
  • CDs sold in Canada this year: 1,492,195 (down 12.5% from this point in 2024)
  • Vinyl sold in Canada this year: 1,344,083 (up at 25.1% year-over-year)

Streaming stats:

  • Audio streams in Canada last week: 2,765,696,250 (up 1.3% from the previous week)
  • Audio streams in Canada so far this year: 128,240,862,192 (up 9.8% from a year ago)
