Medical Mysteries of Music

Tired of getting bitten by mosquitoes? Try this song.

The mosquito is not only annoying, but it’s also considered one of the most dangerous animals on earth (look it up!). How many backyard evenings or camping trips have been ruined by these buggers?

DEET helps, as do other chemicals, but there’s gotta be a more organic way beyond citrus candles. How about dubstep?

I stumbled across a study that suggests dubstep repels mosquitoes. It also points to “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” by Skrillex (released 2010) as being the best aural mosquito repellent.

I quote from the research: “In insects, low-frequency vibrations facilitate sexual interactions, whereas noise disrupts the perception of signals from conspecifics [members of the same species] and hosts.” Skrillex’s track hits a sweet spot with high and low frequencies.

“The occurrence of blood-feeding activity was lower when music was being played.” The song also reduced the bugs’ sex drive. At least for the species Aedes aegypti, which is terrible when it comes to spreading Yellow fever.

Something to maybe try this weekend?
