UPDATE: RIP Tom Petty, Dead at 66–OR MAYBE NOT!

At 10:52 pm last evening (October 1), EMS was called to Tom Petty’s home in Malibu after he was discovered unconscious. He was said to be not breathing and in full cardiac arrest.

Petty, who was 66, was rushed to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital after EMTs were able to get a pulse. At least one report says he was put on life support.

UPDATE: Life support was pulled and he has been confirmed dead

I’ve heard from a very reliable source that the heart attack was so massive that he was already brain dead when the ambulance arrived. He was kept on life support overnight and then removed this afternoon. That’s when he died.

TMZ, which is normally pretty reliable on these matters, nows says (and I quote):

1:35 PM PT — Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom’s hospital room. We’re told the family has a do not resuscitate order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live throughout the day, but he’s still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer’s death is inaccurate — the L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept. handled the emergency.

In other words, he’s not dead yet. Maybe.

And then there’s this (apparently) from his daughter, Annakim Violette.

Petty wrapped up a massively successful tour at the Hollywood Bowl last Monday night with the last of three sold out shows on the Heartbreakers’ 40th-anniversary tour.
