Top 15 Songs for a Hurricane, Tropical Storm or Just a Big Wind

[With Sandy being a real bitch, here’s an appropriate playlist from our Dept. of Lists assembled by Brent Chittenden.  – AC]

We’ve been told to batten down the hatches everyone as the Frankenstorm and Hurricane Sandy are supposedly going to drop a ton of water on us over the next little while. So knowing some of you might be stuck inside for a while, this list is extra long and will hopefully get you through the worst of it. Our Top Fifteen Hurricane Songs!

15) Riding the Storm Out – REO Speedwagon

A great suggestion from REO Speedwagon, just hang in there, it will pass soon. Hopefully before your house does.

14) Hurricane – Grace Jones

If Grace Jones doesn’t have the force of a hurricane, I don’t know who is.

13) Riders on the Storm – The Doors

Included more for the opening than anything else, the sound of the thunder and rainfall followed by the great intro, perfect storm music.

12) Dose of Thunder – The Replacements

Just had to include this song. The kids need to know about The Replacements and what better time for you to teach them than when they can’t go outside.

11) Nine Million Rainy Days – The Jesus and Mary Chain

Hopefully not in our future but the way it’s been coming down, one can’t be too sure.

10) Rain – The Cult

Just listen to that chorus. Pretty much describes our forecast for the next few days.

9) Thunderstruck – AC/DC

Ever notice how much songs about thunder also get linked to airshows? Beyond that, this perfect for nature’s light and wind show.

8) Who Will Stop The Rain – Creedance Clearwater Revival

To be honest, I’ve been thinking this since last week.

7) This Tornado Loves You – Neko Case

I’m not a huge Neko Case fan but this song fits our list perfectly.

6) Here Comes The Rain Again – The Eurythmics

Ever since I saw this video when I was a kid, it’s the sng I think of first when it begins to rain.

5) Blowin’ in the Wind – Bob Dylan

For those on the Eastern seaboard, the answer is blowin in the wind. That answer is run and take shelter.

4) Stormy Weather – Etta James

There are tons of versions of this tune but for whatever reason I think the Etta James version fits the current weather patterns the best.

3) The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald – Gordon Lightfoot

A great song about a storm taking a ship down to the depths and a Canadian classic. Lightfoot is a great storyteller.

2) Rock You Like A Hurricane – Scorpions

This also tends to make the playlist of every airshow ever. The Scorpions really did belt out a classic anthem with this song.

1) Like a Hurricane – Neil Young

You know, if I were trapped by a hurricane, I think I’d like this song on in the background. Especially since there’s a good chance it would outlast the storm before it moved on.  [I like Roxy Music’s and the Mission UK’s version of this song, too. -AC]

So what did we miss? Add your songs and thoughts below and hopefully a few or our friends out there will have a good playlist on the ipods if the power goes
