Is This Toronto Radio Station the First in the World to Offer a Bitcoin as a Prize?

I can’t say for sure, but I haven’t heard of another station doing this.

Toronto’s Indie 88 (full disclosure:  I consult the station and I’m damn mad at myself for not coming up with this idea) is giving away one bitcoin as part of a winter contest.  I’ll just quote from what they posted:

Indie88 is giving away a prize that could grow to be worth a huge sum of money…or end up being nearly worthless: One Bitcoin! What the heck is a Bitcoin you ask?
Bitcoin is a digital currency introduced in 2009. It is a cryptocurrency, so-called because it uses cryptography to control the creation and transfer of money. Users send payments by broadcasting digitally signed messages to the network. The value of a Bitcoin fluctuates frequently and has been anywhere between $250-$1,000 CAD in recent months. With some predicting that the value of one Bitcoin could top $10,000 by the end of 2014, this prize has the potential to grow exponentially over time – or become nearly worthless. More about Bitcoin here.Wanna win one?
Listen each morning (January 27-31) to call in and answer the question, “What would you do with a Bitcoin?” At the end of the week, Indie88’s The Morning After with Brian, Matt and Candice will randomly select one entry to win one free Bitcoin (valued at up to $1,000.00 CAD) from Bitcoin Decentral, the home of Toronto’s first Bitcoin ATM, unveiled earlier this month at 64 Spadina Avenue (near King Street West). The winning Indie88 listener will also receive a one-on-one Bitcoin training session from Anthony Di Iorio of the Bitcoin Alliance of Canada at Bitcoin Decentral.

Brilliant, really.  Follow the bitcoin exchange rate in real time here.
