Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry, episode 041: Grand Theft Music

It’s right there at number eight on the list of commandments Moses had downloaded onto his tablets: “Thou shalt not steal.” If it’s not your stuff, leave it alone. You can’t just take something because you want it.

But humans can be despicable and engage in theft all the time, and people will go to extreme lengths to take things that aren’t theirs.

In September 2003, a crew managed to get past 63 security cameras to steal $100 million worth of diamonds from the Antwerp World Diamond Exchange in Belgium. Only one guy ever served time when his DNA was detected on a sandwich in a suspicious place.

About 3,000 tonnes of maple syrup were stolen from a depot in Quebec. That amounted to 77% of the world’s supply in 2012 and was worth $20 million or so. The gang responsible was eventually caught.

And we’ve all heard of DB Cooper. After hijacking a Northwest 727 between Portland and Seattle, he extorted $200,000 in cash. When the plane was airborne again, he put on a parachute and jumped with the money. Some of the cash was recovered, but DB Cooper has been on the lam since November 1971.

The music industry isn’t exactly the most moral or law-abiding place, either. If you know where to look, you’ll find crime all over the place.

This is episode 41 of Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry. And this time, it’s some wild stories of robbery and theft. Call it Grand Theft Music.
