Universal admits the loss of master tapes from these artists in the 2008 fire

If you remember the story of the fire at Universal Music’s secure vault back in 2008, there were allegations that many master recordings were destroyed. There’s a now a class action lawsuit being pursued by a number of artists seeking damages.

A new filing by Universal admits to losing recordings by nineteen artists in the blaze.

  • …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
  • Bryan Adams
  • David Baerwald
  • Beck
  • Sheryl Crow
  • Jimmy Eat World
  • Elton John
  • Les Paul
  • Peter Frampton
  • Michael McDonald
  • Nirvana
  • REM
  • Slayer
  • Sonic Youth
  • Soundgarden
  • Suzanne Vega
  • The Sufaris
  • White Zombie
  • Y&T

That’s a start, but there’s also a claim that 17,000 artists were affected by the fire. The lawyers representing the artists point out that there’s a big difference between 19 artist being affected and Universal’s insurance claim that the number was 17,000. Good point.
