Want to be in the CFNY Spirit of Radio documentary film? Here’s how.

We’re in the final throes of production for the long-in-the-making documentary about CFNY-FM/Toronto (now 102.1 The Edge) with a focus on the station’s influential “Spirit of Radio Years” (1977-1992-ish). All that’s left is to shoot some B-roll, a bunch of editing, license the music–and gather some video testimonials from fans.

If you were a CFNY fan back in those years, get out your smartphone and send us a selfie video and you might end up seeing yourself over the ending credits of the documentary when it’s released in 2024.

Here’s what we’re looking for in 60 seconds or less:

  • A short testimonial about what the radio station meant to you.
  • Memories of the music the station played and how it shaped you.
  • Memories of CFNY DJs and any influence they had on you. Who were your favourites?
  • Anecdotes about you and the station.
  • Do you still have any station swag/merch/paraphernalia from those days? Show it off!

Here are a few more thought-starters for your video:

  1. Did you meet your significant other at a station event or CFNY-sponsored concert? (That happened a lot.)
  2. Did you bring up your kids to listen to the station?
  3. Do you share your musical passion with your children?
  4. Did you visit the station? Why? Meet anyone special?
  5. Do you remember your reaction when the station started playing Madonna and all that pop stuff in 1988?
  6. Were you ever at any of the Canada Day festivals?
  7. Etc.

Send your video to me at [email protected]. Make sure you put “CFNY DOC VIDEO” in the subject line so my email server routes everything into the right folder and nothing gets lost or sent to junk. Your submission window is between now and December 31 at 11:59 pm ET.

A video will be too big for an attachment, so you’re encouraged to use a service like WeTransfer, Google Drive, or Apple’s MailDrop. And by all means, spread the word using your own social media accounts.

Any and all personal memories are welcome. We’ll sort through all the submissions. We promise.

  • I collected hundreds of signatures to keep CFNY on the air. It was a radio station that meant so much to me.

    • Do you still have them? Could you show them on camera in a quick selfie video?
