Watch Out for This Young Canadian Drummer. Wow.

His name is Evan Patterson and comes from St. George, which is a place west of Brantford, Ontario. Introduced by his dad to bands like Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails and Front 242 (cool dad, huh?), the kid took to playing drums first wtih Rock band and then with a real kit.

Turns out he was a natural.  He managed to strike up a correspondence with industrial drummer Joe Letz (also the actual model for the punk rock drummer in Rock Band 2).  Letz mentored Evan with some personalized lessons.  Evan also hooked up with Trevor Friedrich of Combichrist, who was also impressed with the kids’s talent

To cut a long story short, Evan was invited by Trevor to NYC to sit in with a group called Imperative Reaction where he just killed it.  He’s since sat in with a number of other groups.

And he’s just 15.  Watch this.

My dad just took me to hockey practice.

  • I was as good (or better) when I was 15. No youtube then, though. Pass me the bingo card.

  • I once had to talk to Evan's mom on the phone so he could come play Guitar Hero with us lol. Great to see him on your blog Alan!

  • I love when people say "I was better" or "I'd have been discovered if there was YouTube back then"

    WAAAAAAAH…

Get back to your cubical and quite your crying.

  • I like it. Kid has talent.

Not sure about the gothapotamus on vocals though. The half-a-mannequin mic stand is just odd, even for an electro-industrial band. Being that it's some random small club makes it seem even creepier.

Still, I like the music. I'd buy their music.

Not crying at all, just saying I was left less than impressed. Felt the need to comment. You know, since the option is encouraged and all. There were a few of us back then (not that long ago actually come to think of it). Maybe this kid does deserve credit for being almost as good as us at his age at something credible when most of his mates are probably only good at Xbox.

    Just a musing…

As for the music? Rubbish. And what's with the severe lack of articulation from the Gothapotamus (loved that one) and the crowd. So primitive. Every word is f*ck. These crowds watch(ed) Star Trek (no offence, Al) and never get laid.

  • Kid is pretty good. Needs some classical training too to round him out.
Music by the group? Crap, and that is a shame if the kid and his dad think it is the pinnacle of success. Nice of the group to give the kid a leg up, but don't limit him either!

  • He is GOOD STUFF! Its great to leave a comment but not so great to piss in another's cornflakes. He is young, he hasn't been at it for very long. He seems determined and he had some big names take a liking to him.
Its great for a kid that age to have his parents stand behind/ beside him and encourage his dream. Kids need to dream and have opportunities.
I can only imagine how awesome he will be in a few years!!
Aim for the stars and don't let a few "Grumpy Gus's" with missed opportunities get you down.
I think your GREAT Evan! 🙂

  • Not impressed at all. Show me him play without electronic beats behind him and with a band who isn't shit and I will give him another listen.

  • No doubt, the kid has chops. I'dlike to see video of him playing that isn't shot in some tiny club. Let's see something that isn't so poor quality.

I love Imperative Reaction. Must remember to listen to them on the way home from work today.

  • Adam, you understand you're putting down a kid because of your failed dreams.. Less than impressed? If you were as good or better, why weren't you discovered? And don't blame it on no internet. TRUE talent will make it self noticed.
This kid is awesome, and self taught.
Way to go Evan, keep it up! I'd love to see you have your own youtube channel and post vidoes weekly/bi/weekly/whenever of you doing other covers, classic rock, punk ect or even you just jamming out to your own crwative beats
You have lots of potential kid! Explore some more music. I want to see more of you!!!!
