Weekly Music Sales Report and Analysis: 09 January 2014

As usual, numbers start low following the Christmas season, but here’s where things stand for the Canadian market through the first week of 2014.

Overall sales are down 9% from this time last year.  Digital album sales are ahead of physical sales (that’s normal for this time of year) but are running 8% lower from this week a year ago.  Physical sales are 11% down while digital track sales are down 9% from 2013.

Beyonce is back at #1 on the album charts, selling 8.700 units while Lorde’s Pure Herione moves into the #2 position followed by Katy Perry’s Prism.  There are no debuts in on the charts this week because there were no new releases last week.

The biggest single remains Pitbull’s “Timer” with 38,000 downloads.

Stateside, it’s more of the same thing.  Overall sales are down 14% from a year go, digital outselling physical, CDs down by 19%, digital albums down 11%, digital tracks down 11%.  But it’s early.

The Frozen soundtrack is at #1 (fitting, considering the weather across the continent) with 165,000 units, up 55% from last week.  Beyonce is at #2 followed by Eminem.

And once again, it’s Pitbull with the top-selling single, movie 301,000 downloads.  And that damn “Wrecking Ball” is still the most-streamed song in America with 7,659,115 listens.
