Weekly Music Sales Report and Analysis: 15 January 2014

This is the first full sales week of 2014–and it was an ugly one.

We’re already down 9% from this time last year with CD sales dropping by 13% year-to-date.  And it doesn’t get better when it comes to digital albums (-6%) and digital singles (-10%).

Beyonce stays at #1 with 6,400 units. the lowest level since since Bruno Mars back in July when he claimed top spot with just 4,200 copies.  Pitbull’s “Timber” is still the best-selling track with 29,000 downloads sold.  That’s seven weeks in a row.

In the US, sales are down 15% over last year with CDs down by 13%, digital albums cold by 13% and digital tracks down by 11%.

The Frozen soundtrack stays at #1 with sales of 86,000 copies.  We haven’t seen a number that low since J. Cole had a top album with 58,000 units. Katy Perry is at the top of the digital songs chart with “Dark Horse,” selling 243,000 downloads.

As for the most-streamed song, it belongs to Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love” with 5,529,841 listens.
