Survey

Well, this is somewhat distressing: Gen Alpha has no interest in rock

Damn kids. They don’t know what’s good for them.

Gen Alpha, the cohort born between 2010 and 2024–the first generation born entirely in the 21st century and all its digital splendour–don’t seem to have developed a liking for rock, hard rock, metal, classic rock, alt-rock, or any other form of rock you want to mention.

This information comes from Zigazoo, “the world’s largest social media platform for kids.” The polled 4500 of these young sprogs, asking them about their favourite genres of music. (I have no idea how you poll anyone born after 2015 because they’re like, you know, less than 10 years old.)

The results are as follows:

  • Pop: 31%
  • K-Pop: 25%
  • Christian: 17%
  • Country: 17%
  • Hip-Hop: 10%

Okay, fine. But were your musical tastes cemented before your teenage years? Everyone starts with the easiest and most digestible music–pop–before moving on to music with more emotional and cultural substance. The most important years are between 14 and 24 when music becomes an all-consuming thing for most people. That’s when our tastes and interests solidify.

And seriously, what kind of methodology would work with this kind of survey? What does a six-year-old know?

They’ll figure it out, especially when they discover their parents’ music collection.
