What metal songs should you listen to for your mental health?
A new study by a health and wellness sign called Tebra called “Healing Harhomie” (via Loudwire) sought to find out which songs appear the most on playlists that focus on and promote mental health. They surveyed about 1,000 people (208 of which were medical professionals) and went through more than 68,000 songs on Spotify playlists related to mental health.
To my surprise and delight, the best music for mental health was, yes, rock with the top three acts being The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin.
If we drill down further, we find that the best indie artists are Mitski, TV Girl, and Canada’s Mother Mother. For metal, the best prescriptions are Black Sabbath, Metallica, and, Slipknot. (Hey, just because metal is loud and aggressive doesn’t mean it’s not good for you.)
A few other takeaways:
- 79% of people use music to help them through dark times. Makes you wonder what the other 21% are doing.
- The person used most for those dark times? Taylor Swift.
- 61% says music calms their anxiety. About 36% say that rock is their go-to genre for that.
- Country fans and those who like reggae have the best mental health. But if you’re into indie/alternative and metal, you’re evidently more likely to report that you’re suffering from poor mental health. Oh, dear.
- When it comes to healthcare professionals, one in three think that EDM is the solution for improving mental health.
I’ll leave you with these nifty charts.
