What’s the big deal with Dolby ATMOS and other new audio tech? Check this out.

You may have heard about new types of music production that take things behind two-channel stereo. Along with Apple’s Spatial Audio and Sony’s 360 codec, there’s also Dolby ATMOS. I had a chance to listen to some fresh ATMOS mixings in a studio setting in LA last year and I was completely blown away. Seriously. I have no words to describe the awesome mixes I heard of “Epic” by Faith No More and “Love Shack” by the B-52s.

Digital Music News reports on the opinions of Alex Solano, a big name in the world of this new audio tech. He’s an evangelist for how this mixes make music sound better and more immersive.

If you’re interested in pursuing this, Solano recommend these “reference quality” mixes.

  • Stressed Out, Blurry Face — twenty one pilots
  • Renegades VHS — X Ambassadors
  • Blessed, (feat. Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Made In Lagos: Deluxe Edition — Wizkid

  • I really love some of the proper Atmos projects. Right now Peter Gabriel’s i/o is absolutely magical.
