The Secret History of Rock

When You Have Rock Star Money, You Buy Art

What does the rock star who has everything buy for himself (or herself) when feeling blue?

How about some expensive art?  David Bowie has long been known and respected as an art collector. Same with Adam Clayton of U2?  He has a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat, a famous New York artist whose stuff has skyrocketed in value since he died in 1988.

Lenny Kravitz has a Basquiat, too.  But both those guys are pikers when compared to Lars Ulrich of Metallica.

He’s a REAL collector and quite the expert on art, too.  As hard as this is to believe, he’s always spent his free time on Metallica tours going through books on art history, reading auction catalogues and walking through galleries.  Lars’ personal collection was so large he was able to sell off nearly 20 paintings in 2002 for more than $15 million.
