Where are we in the vinyl vs. CD sales battle this week?

I’m a bit late posting this data because I was traveling back over the dateline and I forgot what day it was.

We’ve been using Luminate music consumption data to monitor the sales race between vinyl and CDs in Canada. At this point, CDs are outselling fresh vinyl record but because vinyl is more expensive, records are leading in terms of revenue. However, in terms of sheer numbers, CD sales are pulling ahead of LPs.

Here are the latest figures for the week ending March 28.

  • Total CDs sold year-to-date in Canada: 380,176 (down 20.6% from the same time last year)
  • Today LPs sold so far this year: 358,692 (up 30% from last year)
  • CDs sold last week: 31,401 (up 4.8% from the week before)
  • LPs sold last week: 27,580 (up 8.9% from the week before)
  • On-demand audio streaming: 2.720 billion songs streams in the last week.
