Which artists and genres are responsible for the biggest carbon footprints?

We’re all concerned about the effects of climate change, but what does that have to do with music? Quite a bit, as it turned out. A company called Utilities Now did a little research into which artists and genres are responsible for the most carbon footprints when it comes to streams.

What? Streams are environmentally unfriendly? Absolutely. By the time you tally up all the energy required (servers, routers, transmission, computers, mobile phones, etc), streaming requires more than the manufacture of vinyl records–and they’re made of forever plastic.

  • Taylor Swift is kinda, er, dirty because her Spotify streams require as much energy as over 20,100 households or 140,113 roundtrip flights between New York and London.
  • Latin music pumps out the most emissions with all its streams at 39.9 million kg CO2 per artist.
  • Bad Bunny’s streams sucks up 243.7 million miles in emissions (the equivalent distance driven in a car)
  • Metal fans are the greenest streams, averaging 11.7 kg CO2, which is the lowest among all genres. In fact, metal is pretty darn green compared to everything else.
