Which countries are worst in the world when it comes to music piracy?

Music piracy is still a problem, even though the ubiquity and easy access to music streaming makes stealing stuff more difficult than just signing on to the freemium version of a streaming music service. Yet here we are, talking about stream rippers, illegal downloads, and all manner of torrents.

According to a new study by Muso (via Hypebot), the worst offending countries are:

  1. Iran (11.8% of all music piracy on the planet. Understandable given that there are few if any legal options under the mullahs.)
  2. India (11.5%. Maybe because of all the tech workers in the country?)
  3. United States (9.9%. No excuse.)

Where’s Canada? I don’t know. The report doesn’t list us. I can tell you that music is the fourth-most pirated form of entertainment behind (1)

Canadians shouldn’t be too smug. We rank fourth in the world when it comes to directing traffic to unlicensed websites for TV behind the US, Russian, and the UK. If we look at film piracy, we’re number 14. The top five are India, the US, Turkey, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
