Why did Donald Trump order the construction of these statues of musical figures?
One of the last things Donald Trump did as president was issue an executive order for the construction of a “Garden of American Heroes.” This apparently was some kind of campaign pledge that I seemed to have missed.
I quote: “The National Garden will be built to reflect the awesome splendour of our country’s timeless exceptionalism.”
On Monday (January 18) with just hours to go in his presidency, Trump issued a list of 250 statues he wants commissioned. Why these people? It’s not clear. Some are politicians. Others are historical figures. A few are sports people. And a bunch are singers and musicians.
Like who?
- Aretha Franklin
- Whitney Houston
- Ray Charles
- Miles Davis
- Duke Ellington
- Louis Armstrong
- Johnny Cash
- Nat King Cole
- Billie Holiday
- Elvis Presley
- Frank Sinatra
If that wasn’t strange enough, the Garden of American Heroes will also include Alex Trebek (a Canadian), Alfred Hitchcock (a Brit) and Ingrid Bergman (a Swede). Just sayin’.
