Win Butler of Arcade Fire is now officially a Canadian citizen
After living for years in Montreal, Arcade Fire man Win Butler thought it was about time he made it official. This week (July 9), Win finally became a Canadian citizen.
Born in Truckee, California, and then raised in the Houston area, Win moved to Montreal to attend McGill in 2000. That’s where he met his wife, Régine Chassagne and eventually graduated with a BA in religious studies in 2004.
Montreal became the home base for Arcade Fire, even as the signed with North Carolina-based indie label, Merge. Because of the makeup of the rest of the band and the way songwriting was spread out, Arcade Fire qualified as Canadian under CanCon rules. (That explains why you hear so much AF on the radio in Canada, doesn’t it?)
Now, nearly 20 years after moving to Canada, Wil applied for and received Canadian citizenship. He now has both Canadian and American passports.
Nice! One small correction, though, Wil: We spell “honor” with a “u.” It’s “honour.” It’s okay. You’ll get it.
