YouTube Launches Best.Cover.Ever. Contest

Of the billions of videos on YouTube, a shocking number involve people covering their favourite songs. Even now this causes consternation for publishers and record labels who consider these homages to be just another form of copyright infringement. That attitude is shortsighted, though, because if properly tagged, these tribute videos can generate a steady flow or revenue.

YouTube seems to have lined up all their ducks properly for this new music competition called Best.Cover.Ever. The idea is for anyone anywhere to upload themselves doing a cover. Winners will get a chance to collaborate with a superstar artist.

Executive produced by Ryan Seacrest (he’s unavoidable, isn’t he?) and hosted by Ludacris, the series debuts on YouTube November 20. It’s another example of how the concept of TV is moving away from that rectangular thing in the living room.

Sure, the serious contestants will be fun to watch, but I want to see the outtakes and rejects. That’s where the real gold lies.
