Can you identify this mystery song?

An email appeared from Natalie:

I wonder if you can remember a song or more like a poem that came out in the 80s or maybe early 90s.

The song/poem is a spoken work by a female. The background is primarily the sound of women’s high heels on the pavement. I don’t think there is actually any music. The woman talks about the lack of safety and how women need to be aware of their surroundings at night or something to that effect. Does this ring a bell at all?

Thanks,
Natalie/Toronto ON

Anyone? It’s driving me nuts.

  • The song Natalie is looking for is Martina by Meryn Cadell

  • Sure. It’s called “Martina,” from the album Angel Food for Thought by Toronto performance artist Meryn Cadell. Her best known track from that was (I think) called The Sweater, about a girl’s crush on a boy and his sweater. She later changed her name and gender, I don’t know what he calls himself these days.
