Like hardcore punk? Enjoy gardening? Spotify has brought both together for you.

Spotify’s in-house staff of playlist creators are always looking for new themes. Here’s one I did not see coming: Hardcore Gardening. The new playlist combines the best elements of hardcore punk designed to help gardeners and their plants.

I quote from Spotify:

“Horticulturist, author and lecturer Chris Beardshaw says that research shows hardcore music helps plants grow. Stacked against other sonic selections like classical and pop, plants nurtured by hardcore are stimulated into amplified growth.

“’Surprisingly, a increasing body of research shows that the frequency of hardcore music helps plants grow,’ Chris told For the Record. ‘The thumping, repetitive, high-decibel noise of hardcore stimulates and energizes plants cells, almost as if they’re bouncing around in a tiny hardcore mosh pit.’”

Hardcore is good for plants? Apparently. Hard rock–including hardcore–triggered the greatest response when played to plants, resulting in excellent increases in biomass. It has something to do with the frequencies inherent in hardcore prompting a plant’s ability to increase starch, which is what it needs to store energy. There was also an increase in hormones within the plant, and that promotes cell division and growth.

The only key? Keep the volume below 120 dB. That’s bad for the plants–and for your ears.

There’s also a new line of apparel via an LA streetwear company Brain Dead called Plant Growth Through Extreme Noise.

I spend a lot of time puttering in my backyard. My neighbours are gonna love me.
