Mexico is the Capital of Alternative Music. Wait–What?

Last.fm has been around for about 14 years, which means they have tons and tons of data on what kind of music people have listened to–and where those people are. Crunching everything after 100 billion plays (equivalent to 761,034 years of music), Last.fm would like everyone to know the following on this interactive display.

According to their metrics, Sofia, Bulgaria, consumes more metal than anywhere else while Istanbul is the capital of listening to romantic music. But if you thought that was weird, note that the city into country music more than any other is Hamburg, Germany. And the capital of alternative music? Mexico City.

  • Alan, as a Mexican I can say that this is a result of the following; internet in Mexico still an expensive luxury, streaming music is not as common as in the US and Canada, I’m assuming people who streams music is doing it from the office and are those that have an office job or at the highest percentile, I want to say educated professionals who I want to venture , have a better taste of music.
