Ongoing History Daily: The record obsessions of The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach

You can tell that the sound of The Black Keys is the result of a ton of different old-school influences. Guitarist Dan Auerbach has his father to thank for this.

Dan’s dad was an antique dealer and was always looking for old blues and soul records from labels like Stax and Chess. Some he flipped in his shop while others became part of the family’s record collection, which, of course, Dan absorbed as he was growing up. He also has a couple of uncles who are bluegrass musicians. He still hires them for various recording sessions.

These days, Dan is still into this music and is a hardcore collector of these genres.

Ever wondered where some of that Black Keys sound comes from? Now you know.
