Ongoing History Daily: White Stripes facts

Here are three pieces of information you can use to wow your friends with your vast knowledge of the White Stripes, specifically the Icky Thump album.

(1) Icky Thump is the first White Stripes album to feature a title track. Go on, take a look. You’ll find I’m right.

(2) Jack White says the term “Icky Thump” is something his hot Brazilian model wife says when she’s frustrated. That’s where the title of the record came from: the exasperated supermodel.

And (3) But that’s not where she got it. “Icky Thump” can be traced back to a skit on an old Monty Python-like British TV show called The Goodies. The skit featured a new martial art called “Icky Thump” that involved beating your opponent with a blood sausage. A viewer actually died laughing when the skit was first broadcast.

  • Karen Elson, Jack White’s ex wife is from Oldham, just north of Manchester, UK. Not Brazil. They got married in Brazil.
