Report: Canadian TV viewing is WAY different than the US or UK.

A company called ThinkTV is interested in what Canadians watch on their TVs. Their data show that we aren’t like Americans or Brits in this regard. Not at all, in fact. According to ThinkTV’s Fall Total TV & Streaming Viewing report, the reality of Canadian TV is unique.

Just 20% of TV viewing in Canada goes to streaming (12%) and YouTube (8%). The rest goes to regular linear TV. Compare that to the US where only 50% watch linear TV, 36% go to streaming, and 14% watch YouTube. In the UK, 70% are sticking with linear TV, 19% stream, and 11% watch YouTube.

What does this mean? That Canadians should be VERY careful when it comes to automatically extrapolating American media data to actual Canadian behaviors.

To underscore that, here’s another chart that breaks down things even further. Based on the constant chatter about Netflix, you’d expect its share of TV viewing would be higher than just 4%. Apple Music doesn’t even deserve its own slice of the pie.
