Should we change the lyrics to “O Canada?” We seem to be split.
Years ago, William Shatner received a special award and was asked to make of a video of him “singing” “O Canada.” He made an interesting tweak to the lyrics which I thought was pretty good. Instead of “our home and native land,” he posited that it really should be “our home ON native land.”
This ad-hoc lyrical change passed without much debate back then. But back in February, Jully Black pulled the same trick during her rendition of the national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game in Salt Lake City. That caused a bit of a stir. Since then, though, a number of people have come out in favour of the change.
So what do people across the country thinks? According to a new survey:
- 41% of Anglophone Canadians love the idea
- 44% do not.
- 55% of Anglophones 18-34 are supportive
- 42% of Anglophones 35-54 like it
- Only 28% of people 55+ are behind the idea.
- Canadians of South Asian decent have the highest support for the idea at 68%
- Indigenous Canadians like it to the tune of 64%
- Canadians of East Asian decent sit at 51%.
- Only 36% of English-speaking Canadians of European decent are on board.
More analysis can be found here.
Sad and very sad:
Canadians of East Asian decent sit at 51%.
Only 36% of English-speaking Canadians of European decent are on board.
Nothing is the same anymore
People seem to change everything
Many people are not satisfied with anything that makes sense
So yes it will probabl y be
Legislated by our pm
