The Foo Fighters and Wolfgang Van Halen punked fans in Daytona Beach, Florida

One of the greatest (and most difficult to play) bits of guitar artistry is “Eruption,” track two on Van Halen’s debut album. No one forgets the first time they heard Eddie Van Halen rip through that. Amazing stuff.

On Saturday (May 11), the Foo Fighters played the Welcome to Rockville Festival in Daytona Beach, Florida. As is their wont, the Foos went through some covers (The Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage,” “Blitzkrieg Bop” by The Ramones, and even “March of the Pigs” from Nine Inch Nails) before Dave Grohl started complaining that he never gets a chance to perform a guitar solo.

“I never get a f*ckin’ solo!,” he whinged, “So, since this is the last f*ckin’ night of [our run of spring US dates], I’m gonna do a f*ckin’ solo. How about that? … You may think, ‘That guy can’t play a f*uckin’ solo.’ You wanna see me do a guitar solo right now?”

So he did. Except that he didn’t.

It looked and sounded like Dave was playing “Eruption.” But the jig was soon up. Psyche!
