Winnipeg Dude Gets Off Easy with $2 MILLION DOLLAR Music Piracy Fine

Yes, you read that right: the guy got off easy.  This was the result of a plea bargain.

The case against Rah Singh Ramgotra has been going on for five years. He was arrested by the RCMP in 2008 when they were looking into Audiomaxxx, a company thought to be selling bootleg music, music and porn on the black market.

The cops raided his office and found all kinds of duplication gear and computers as well as what appeared to be a gigantic database of customers.  Oh, and more than 200,000 CDs that were all ready to be shipped out.

At a final hearing this past Thursday, Ramgotra copped a plea that will see him stay out of jail but pay back $1.9 million in restitution–the estimated amount the aggrieved parties were ripped off–along with a $150,000 fine.

Can you imagine if this case had gone before the courts in the U.S. instead of kinder, gentler Canada? The guy would be on the hook for BILLIONS.
