20 Reasons to Thank a Music Teacher

I’m a big, big believer in music education.  Why? SueOnMusic.com sums it up pretty well.

1. They taught you practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent. If you keep repeating the same passage incorrectly, then you’re ultimately learning it wrong.2. They taught you hard work pays off when you practice.

3. They taught you that it’s okay to make mistakes. Mistakes are a part of life and there’s no need to say “sorry” after every wrong step/note.

4. They taught you that after you make a mistake, you keep going and no one will notice.

5. They push you past your limits to show how far you can go. “Reset! One more once!”

  • Not only those points, but also a good teacher will instill a taste for quality music as well as those disposable pop songs. I find that when I teach anyone, I try to show them the roots of the music they enjoy so that not only will they have a better musical vocabulary but also understanding that some music will be timeless for a reason. To see the history of a genre or to understand that there are just bands/artists that a good musician should be aware of.
