A pair of Kanye’s used sneakers just sold for US$1.8 million

Back in the late aughts when Kanye was getting deeper into the fashion world, he wore a pair of customized Nike high tops known as Air Yeezy on the Grammy Awards. Those sneakers were the prototype of a design that eventually went on sale, launching Kanye into the footwear stratosphere.

Those same sneakers just went up for auction. The selling price? Just US$1.8 million.

The buyer wasn’t your usual sneakerhead. It was RARES, a “sneaker investing platform” which offers fractional ownership of famous pairs of shoes. RARES allows users to invest in sneakers by buying and trading shares in the shoes. Yep, just like people have fractional ownership of private jets. Or bitcoin. Or real estate holdings.

The price paid by RARES is far, far beyond the US$560,000 paid for a pair of 1985 Air Jordan 1’s that were designed for an worn by Michael Jordan.
