Why Can Gabby Giffords Sing When She Still Struggles to Speak?

Doctors love to study people with brain injuries because it gives them new insights into how that squishy stuff in our skulls works.

In the case of Gabrielle Giffords, the congresswoman who survived a bullet wound to the head, researchers are fascinated by her brain’s relationship between speech and singing.  While she still struggles to form words–she can only speak two or three words at a time and speaking in full sentences is tough–she sings just fine.
