Can’t sing or play an instrument but want to perform? Spotify has a new AI tool that may help
Artificial intelligence is finding all kinds of love in the music industry right now. Take Basic Pitch, an audio-to-MIDI converter now being touted by Spotify. Basically, it can take any audio recording–including something as simple as a hummed melody–and turn it into MIDI file. MIDI–which stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface–is the standard language that allows different types of gear to talk to each other. Once converted this way, the musical material, no matter what the original source, can be loaded into Garbage, Audacity, Pro Tools, Logic or any other digital audio workstation and manipulated into a masterpiece.
Spotify says Basic Pitch is “built for artists and producers who want an easy way to turn their recorded ideas into MIDI.”
Want to try it out? It actually works quite well. Just warble something here and you’ll get back some MIDI notation. You can also hear how it sounds as an instrument.
Cool, innit? But you also have to wonder what kind of data is being harvested from this? No, Spotify doesn’t save any of the audio, but could users teach Basic Pitch something about the way people make music? Maybe.
