Artist: Theon Cross
Song: ‘Wings’
Album/EP: Single
Tubist Theon Cross breaks solo from his usual outfit Sons of Kemet to deliver an astounding jazz performance in ‘Wings’. Cross doesn’t just take flight on his own – the arrangement of flitting drums, chugging bass, and backing brass accompany the scorching sounds I’ve never heard anyone draw out of a tuba before.
Watch/Listen:
Artist: Paramore
Song: ‘This Is Why’
Album/EP: This Is Why
Continuing their ongoing transformation into genre chameleons, Paramore return (again!) with the sizzling ‘This Is Why’. Taking a bit of a post-modern approach on this go around, the Nashville trio focus on huge angular-yet-catchy choruses collapsing upon themselves into flowing mosaic verses anchored by frontwoman Hayley Williams’ iconic voice.
Watch/Listen:
Artist: The Backseat Lovers
Song: ‘Close Your Eyes’
Album/EP: Waiting To Spill
Heartstring-tugging vocals swell and soar in the forefront of The Backseat Lovers’ operatic ‘Close Your Eyes’. A bare-it-all approach more often seen with quieter singer-songwriter types, this tune foregoes solo acoustic guitars for moody expansive electrics throughout its many climactic peaks and softspoken triumphs.
Watch/Listen:
Artist: Prinz Grizzley
Song: ‘I Keep On Searching’
Album/EP: Single
Stomping Americana blues straight from the Austrian alps of all places, Chris Comper aka Prinz Grizzley busts out the hard stuff in ‘I Keep On Searching’. Comper’s whiskey-soaked vocals fit right in with the driving four-to-the-floor and ripping riffs – no doubt you’d expect to hear this one belting from a Tennesseean bar stage.
Watch/Listen:
Artist: Sunday Lemonade
Song: ‘Runaway’
Album/EP: Single
Sunny and whimsical folk-pop from Aussie duo Sunday Lemonade, ‘Runaway’ is a fresh breath of sonic optimism, of lightly strummed guitars, stick-clicking percussion, and crystalline harmonies. There’s no inauthentic flashiness here, just good vibes.
