Now that Tom DeLonge is back in blink-182, what about Matt Skiba?

When Tom DeLonge left blink-182 in 2015, he was replaced by Matt Skiba, guitarist with Alkaline Trio. He was with them through one album and a bunch of shows. But then earlier this year, he went public with his confusion about whether he was still in the band.

We know now that he was on his way out because Tom had reconciled with Mark and Travis. In fact, at the time of Matt’s social media post, Tom was already working with the other two guys on new music, an album, and a massive world tour. Matt probably knew he was done, but didn’t want to come out and say it.

Tom wanted to address this awkward situation, so he published this open letter to Matt.

Hi Matt –

Tom DeLonge here. I wanted to take a minute and say thank you for all that you have done to keep the band alive and thriving in my absence. I think you are enormously talented (I still love to listen to your band to this day). You have always been so kind to me, not only in the press, but also to others. I really noticed. Emotions between the three of us in blink have always been complicated, but Mark’s cancer really put things in perspective. But to be honest, the band would not even be here today if it were not for your ability to jump in and save the day. So from my heart to yours, thank you for being a member of our band.
