Ongoing History daily: The mad manure bomber of Calgary

This is one of the weirdest stories about Canadian music you have ever heard. Cal Cavendish was a country and folk singer from Calgary. He was pretty good, but he was very frustrated that he wasn’t making enough money despite plowing everything into his music career. He decided to take out his frustrations on the city.

Cavendish happened to have his pilot’s license, so one day in 1975, he grabbed 100 of his new single called “Government Inspected” and 100 pounds of cow manure and flew his single-engine plane over downtown Calgary. When he got over Ninth Avenue, he opened the door and dumped all the records and all the manure over the street. He called it his “protest flight for the starving musician.”

After he landed, he turned himself in and was fined $4,000.
