The Alphabetical Archive for 03 August 2012: The The

With an almost un-Googleable name (search for Matt Johnson instead), The The remains a criminally underrated band.  I almost always use the 1989 album, Mind Bomb, to test audio equipment.  The production on this CD is astonishing.

This was a single from the album.  Notice the shout-out to the Sweet’s “Ballroom Blitz” at the beginning.

  • This is an awesome example of music to good for radio. I was fortunate to see Matt and what must have been a 12 person band opening for Depeche Mode in Hamilton. The The were great. You could tell that they all enjoyed what they were doing, which just added to the performance. Unfortunately the pairing of these 2 bands was ridiculous as was evident by the some of the other concert goers around me, booing and heckling.

  • One of the greatest shows I've seen was when The The played at the campus pub in Waterloo, Ont. I've also seen him at Kingswood, where, iirc, The Cranberries opened for him. I have a copy of his first album 'Burning Blue Soul' on vinyl. 😉

And while we're talking about Matt, he used a singer named Neneh Cherry on his 'Infected' album before her career took off…
